Tips for a clean classification
- Shoot the pattern as flat-on as you can; strong perspective is
handled, but less is better.
- Include at least 3–4 repeats of the motif in both directions.
- Even lighting helps — hard shadows can add symmetry that isn't
in the pattern (or hide symmetry that is).
- If the automatic scan refuses, tap the four corners of one
repeating tile to help it lock on.
- Use Structure view when colors break the symmetry — a two-color
checkerboard is cmm in color, p4m in structure.
Why did it refuse my photo?
The app refuses rather than guesses when a pattern is genuinely
ambiguous: not enough repeats, two patterns mixed in one frame, or a
quasi-periodic tiling (Penrose fans, we see you — that's what the
rosette shelf is for).
