The short version

By default, Symmetry Hunter collects no data: no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking. All pattern analysis happens on your device, and your photos never leave it. If you choose to join the optional global registry, the app shares a small, anonymous summary of each saved find — never the photo — as described below.

Photos and camera

Photos you take or select are analyzed on your device by the app's built-in geometry engine. They are never uploaded anywhere — this is true whether or not you join the registry. Saved finds (the photo, its classification, and the date) are stored only in the app's local storage on your phone.

Location

If you grant location access, the app attaches the location where a pattern was photographed to that saved find, so your collection can show where you found it. The app works fully without location access. Location stays on your device unless you join the registry (below), which shares it rounded to roughly a kilometer.

The global registry (opt-in)

Community features — first-discovery credit, the world discovery map, hunts, and leaderboards — are strictly opt-in and off by default. If you enable them, each find you save sends to our server:

• a 64-bit mathematical fingerprint of the pattern's repeating cell (the photo itself is never sent and cannot be reconstructed from the fingerprint),
• a small image tile of that repeating cell — the pattern's motif only, cropped and rectified out of the photo, shown on the world discovery map; the photo itself, and everything around the pattern, stays on your phone,
• the symmetry group, rarity tier, and points,
• your location rounded to about a kilometer (if granted),
• a random identifier created by the app — not your name, Apple ID, phone number, or advertising ID — plus an optional public handle you choose for leaderboards,
• a hardware-backed Apple App Attest signature, used only to keep leaderboards honest.

None of this is linked to your identity, sold, or shared with third parties, and it is used only to run the features above. You can turn the registry off at any time in the collection screen; to have your registry data deleted, email us the handle shown in the hunts screen.

Purchases

The optional "Full Collection" unlock is processed entirely by Apple's App Store. We receive no personal or payment information from it.
